Do I need flood insurance?

Homeowners and renters policies don't cover flooding. That includes rising water from a storm, a creek or a lake. Answer a few questions to see where you stand.

Not sure? Look up your address on the FEMA flood map.

Good to know

There's usually a 30-day wait. A new National Flood Insurance Program policy usually doesn't start for 30 days, so you can't buy it when a storm is on the way. A policy bought as part of closing on a home is the main exception.

Flood zones aren't the whole story. FEMA reports that more than 20% of flood claims come from outside the high-risk zones. Outside those zones, flood coverage is often much cheaper.

There's more than one option. Besides the federal program, private flood carriers can sometimes offer higher limits or a shorter wait. We can compare both.
